Military Macaw vs African Grey — Which Parrot Is Right for You?

June 25, 2026 • Muhammad Abid

Two of the most sought-after parrots in the world — the Military Macaw and the African Grey — couldn’t be more different in personality, size, and what they need from an owner. If you’re trying to decide between them, this comparison will help you make the right call.

Size and Physical Presence

The Military Macaw is a large parrot — roughly 27–30 inches from beak to tail, with a wingspan that commands attention. They are physically imposing birds with brilliant green plumage, a red forehead, and a beak strong enough to crack nuts with ease. Owning a Military Macaw means dedicating serious space: a cage at minimum 36″×48″ and ideally a dedicated bird room or large play area.

The African Grey is a medium-to-large parrot — around 12–14 inches — with understated grey feathers and a striking red tail. They take up far less physical space than a macaw, making them more practical for apartment living or smaller homes.

Intelligence and Talking Ability

This is where the African Grey wins decisively. African Greys are widely regarded as the most intelligent birds on the planet — research by Dr. Irene Pepperberg demonstrated that Greys can understand concepts like color, shape, quantity, and absence. Most develop vocabularies of 200–1,000+ words and use them in context.

Military Macaws talk less and with less clarity than Greys. They can learn words and phrases, but language is not their strength. Their strengths are personality, emotional expressiveness, and sheer presence.

Personality and Temperament

Military Macaw: Bold, playful, and emotionally demonstrative. Military Macaws thrive on interaction and can become strongly bonded to their owners. They are more outwardly affectionate than African Greys — more likely to seek out cuddles and physical contact. They can also be loud, especially when they want attention or feel left out.

African Grey: Sensitive, observant, and deeply intelligent. Greys are more reserved than macaws — they notice everything, bond deeply, but are less overtly cuddly. They are often described as being like a highly perceptive roommate. They pick up on moods, mimic household sounds, and can become stressed if their routine is disrupted.

Noise Level

Military Macaws are louder — significantly so. They have a natural loud call that can carry through walls and upset neighbors. African Greys are more moderate, though they will still vocalize throughout the day. If you live in an apartment or have close neighbors, an African Grey is the more practical choice.

Lifespan

Both species are long-term commitments. African Greys typically live 40–60 years in captivity. Military Macaws can reach 50–70 years. Whichever you choose, you are making a decision for decades — not years.

Which One Is Right for You?

Choose an African Grey if: You want the most intelligent talking parrot available, you have a quieter home, and you’re prepared for a bird that needs consistent mental stimulation and emotional stability.

Choose a Military Macaw if: You want a bold, physically impressive bird with strong personality, you have space, and you’re prepared for noise and a bird that demands to be part of the action.

Both species are available at Mo’s Birds as hand-raised, captive-bred birds. View our African Greys or see our Military Macaws — or reach out and we can help you figure out which bird fits your lifestyle.
